Scope and Contents
The Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer record group contains Dr. Hagemeyer’s personal papers, correspondence, subject files, speeches, photographs, publications, clippings, recognitions, records of academic programs and events, minutes and records of committees and task forces, and other documentation generated under Dr. Hagemeyer’s presidency. Also included in this record group is a sampling of records from Vice President Dr. Noah Gayle Simmons. This record group is divided into 6 series: Subject Files, Administrative Files, Speeches, Organizations, Awards and Recognitions, and VP/Interim Files. Folders within this record group are arranged in alphabetical order and the contents within those folders are further arranged in chronological order.
Series 1. Subject Files (1957-1996): 15 Boxes
The Subject Files series is arranged alphabetically and contains records about Central Piedmont’s academic programs, campus buildings, learning centers, college events, educational initiatives, and student organizations and activities. The series also contains Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer’s presidential achievements, retirement letters, and post-presidential consulting assignments. The contents within the folders are further arranged in chronological order. This series is further divided into three sub-series: Photographs, Newspaper Clippings, and Scrapbooks.
Series 1, Sub-Series 1. Photographs (1963-1990s): 1 Box
The Photographs sub-series contains a photograph album donated by Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer’s family and miscellaneous photographs. Most photographs are undated and contain little to no identifying information.
Series 1, Sub-Series 2. Newspaper Clippings (1964-2003): 2 Boxes
The Newspapers Clippings sub-series contains clippings from Charlotte-based newspaper publishers, such as The Charlotte News, The Charlotte Observer, and Mecklenburg Times. They are divided into subjects and arranged alphabetically. The clippings within the folders are further arranged in chronological order.
Series 1, Sub-Series 3. Scrapbooks (1960-1986): 4 Boxes
The Scrapbooks sub-series contains three scrapbooks (one original, two copies) pertaining to Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer’s family and career. Other scrapbooks focus on the Buildings and Grounds of Central Piedmont, the Central Industrial Education Center, and The Course: WWII. Scrapbooks in this series contain clipped newspaper and magazine articles, photographs, and/or letters.
Series 2. Administrative Files (1958-1998): 9 Boxes
The Administrative Files series contains records, such as correspondence, reports, and minutes, related to the Board of Trustees, Central Piedmont Community College Foundation, and the President’s Cabinet. It also contains correspondence, reports, minutes, and other documents related to the Department of Community Colleges (before and after control of the community college system was transferred to the State Board of Community Colleges in 1981). Other notable files include court cases, Central Piedmont’s long range plan, and the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS). Folders within this series are arranged in alphabetical order and contents within the folders are further arranged in chronological order.
Series 3. Speeches (1960s-1996): 5 Boxes
The Speeches series contains speeches and presentations Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer wrote and delivered at campus events, graduation ceremonies, conferences, club meetings, seminars, and other special occasions. It also includes program booklets and other printed materials from conferences at which Dr. Hagemeyer presented. Folders within this series are arranged in alphabetical order according to speech titles as well as the names of professional organizations, associations, institutions, and other groups. The contents within the folders are further arranged in chronological order.
Series 4. Organizations (1962-1999): 7 Boxes
The Organizations series contains correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, reports, meeting minutes, program booklets, and institutional self-study surveys related to the professional organizations, associations, and relationships Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer cultivated during his years as the first president of Central Piedmont Community College. Folders within this series are arranged in alphabetical order according to the names of professional organizations, associations, and institutions. The contents within the folders are further arranged in chronological order.
Series 5. Awards and Recognitions (1961-1996): 5 Boxes
The Awards and Recognitions series contains correspondence, plaques, awards, certificates, and educational degrees. It also includes Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer’s commencement gown, hoods, and mortarboard. Folders within this series are arranged in alphabetical order and contents within the folders are further arranged in chronological order.
Series 6. VP/Interim Files (1969-1989): 4 Boxes
The VP/Interim Files series contains correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, reports, meeting minutes, program booklets, and reports related to the educational projects and endeavors of Dr. Noah Gayle Simmons. These materials are also related to the professional organizations, associations, and relationships Dr. Simmons cultivated during his latter years as Vice President and Interim President of Central Piedmont Community College. The executive decision was made to maintain some of his files for posterity due to the nature of overlapping subjects between the presidencies of Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer and Dr. Ruth G. Shaw. Folders within this series are arranged in alphabetical order and contents within the folders are further arranged in chronological order.
