Scope and Contents

The Presidential Papers Collection contains records that reflect the activities, efforts, and achievements of Central Piedmont Community College's presidents. The presidents within this collection include Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer (1963-1986), Dr. Ruth G. Shaw (1986-1992), Dr. Paul Anthony Zeiss (1992-2016), and Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer (2016-Present). Additional records include those of Dr. Noah Gayle Simmons, who served as the vice president (1966-1988) and interim president (1986).

The collection is divided into record groups for each president: Record Group I (RGI) for Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer, Record Group II (RGII) for Dr. Ruth G. Shaw, Record Group III (RGIII) for Dr. Paul Anthony Zeiss, Record Group IV (RGIV) for Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer, and Record Group OS (RGOS) for oversized records and items. The records of Dr. Noah Gayle Simmons are located within Record Group I.

The contents of Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer’s record group (RGI) were processed and transferred to archival boxes and arranged by subject, which was a filing system implemented by Dr. Hagemeyer and his assistants. This record group contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, speeches, reports, and other materials created during Dr. Hagemeyer’s time as president.

Record Group I is divided into the following six series: Subject Files, Administrative Files, Speeches, Organizations, Awards and Recognitions, and VP/Interim Files. The Subject Files series is further divided into three sub-series: Photographs, Newspaper Clippings, and Scrapbooks.

The contents of Dr. Ruth G. Shaw’s record group (RGII) were processed and transferred to archival boxes and arranged by subject. Much of the original order from Dr. Hagemeyer carried over into Dr. Shaw’s files. This record group contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, reports, and other materials created during Dr. Shaw’s time as president.

The records of Dr. Paul Anthony Zeiss and Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer are mixed-format, which includes analog and digital versions of correspondence, reports, marketing materials, and other College-related documentation.

Record Group II is currently being re-processed, while Record Groups III-IV are awaiting processing.

Administrative Note

Dr. Richard Herman Hagemeyer (1917-2012) was the Founding President of Central Piedmont Community College from 1963-1986. Prior to Central Piedmont, from 1939-1952, he worked in public schools, industry, and small businesses, including four years with the Ford Motor Company teaching mechanics for the Army Air Corps. From 1952-1962, he started and directed the Trade and Technical Division at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan. In 1962 and 1963, he was the Assistant Superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools. His alma maters included Bowling Green State University (1939), University of Michigan (1957), and Wayne State University (1961). He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1987. He retired from Central Piedmont in summer 1986 and pursued post-presidential consulting assignments.

Dr. Noah Gayle Simmons (1922-2015) served as the Vice President of Central Piedmont Community College from 1966-1988, and the Executive Vice President for Education from 1988-1990 until his retirement that same year. He took on the responsibility of interim president upon the retirement of Dr. Richard H. Hagemeyer in summer of 1986 and the hiring of Dr. Ruth G. Shaw as the second president later that year. The records of Dr. Simmons document his work internally as both Vice President and Interim President of Central Piedmont, as well as and the many committees, focus groups, and organizations he participated in alongside Dr. Hagemeyer.

Information regarding Dr. Ruth G. Shaw, Dr. Paul Anthony Zeiss, and Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer is forthcoming.
