Creator

Biographical / Historical

On July 1, 1963 the North Carolina General Assembly passed the Community Colleges Act, which prompted the merger of Mecklenburg College and the Central Industrial Education Center in Charlotte. The result of this merger was the Charlotte Community College System, which was renamed Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) in November 1963.

The authority of the Board of Trustees of Central Piedmont Community College (formerly the Board of Trustees of the Charlotte Community College System) is established by Chapter 115D-12 of the North Carolina General Statues. The Board consists of twelve voting members. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, the Board of County Commissioners of Mecklenburg County and the Governor of North Carolina each appoint four members to the Board. The President of the Student Government Association serves as a non-voting member.

The Board has the power to appoint the President of the College; provide for the employment of personnel; oversee the efficient management of funds, property, facilities and investments by the College; apply the standards of admission and graduation of students; establish or discontinue programs of instruction; and adopt and enforce policies necessary for the government and operation of the College. Three standing committees currently exist, though other ad hoc committees have existed throughout the history of the Board. Currently, the standing committees include the Executive Committee, the Finance and Facilities Committee and the Instructional Programs and Institutional Support Committee. Historically, the standing committees were the Executive Committee, the Finance Committee and the Facilities Committees.
